Poetic Interlude XX

(For the Little Ones)

Far away by the western waves
The seal-kits play in the whispering caves,
And the darkest moon that ever shone
Glows heavily, heavily.

Far away by the rising rocks
The selkies sit and the seagull mocks,
While floating strands in the rising main
Drift heavily, heavily.

Far away by the Island springs
The fairies dance to the song they sing,
And the lovelorn night of lightest days
Lies heavily, heavily.

Far away by the eastern waves
The storm-winds blow and the ocean slaves,
The low, slow music of centuries past
Sounds heavily, heavily.
