Poetic Interlude XIV

I know songs for breathing warmth into death,
Songs for the creation of bonds and bloodlines,
Songs for the bearing of strong sons,
For binding and bonding,
For life, heart-health, happiness.
Songs to make kings of men, and all men kings,
Songs to create mothers from women,
And food from soil and love from pity.
I know songs to raise before altars,
Songs to sing under rainshowers,
Songs to hum in the depths of winter.
Songs also for hatred of daughters,
And for the despite of sons,
For liking and loving and laughing,
For sorrow and for helplessness.
I have sung them all
And have left off singing.
